Working at iD Tech Camp in Towson was a great experience. It was a ton of fun teaching teens new lessons, and watching them get pumped about games they enjoy. On the last day, a mother of a camper came up to me and shook my hand, and told me that I really made an impact on her sons life. It was surprising at first, I didn't feel like I had done anything special, but I guess it was a big deal for him. It felt like a huge mitzvah, really good.

Here are two maps I made while teaching the kids, they are still in beta stage, check out the pics in the forum threads:

DM-Sniped - A simple sniper practice level. The campers had a ton of fun dueling each other on this.

VCTF-Chaos3 - A remake of one of my favorite q3f maps. Still needs some work.

Hopefully once I get a new computer (quad core!!!) I will be able to finish these up and create some new maps.

Now to do some hardcore studying!

Whew so it's been a long while since I've posted here. Been super busy, but I guess you could say I've been neglecting my own site. So let's take a look at what I've been up to.

Finished post bac classes (straight As this last semester! woohoo), scheduled to take the MCAT exam August 26th.
Started working as an instructor at iD Tech Camp at Towson University, teaching 3D Video Game Design II (Using the Unreal 3 Editor).
Gotten into mapping for quake3 and Unreal3. The Unreal3 Editor blows Gtkradiant completely out of the water me thinks.

I've also made a new website for a client:
http://www.dputzel.com
and I am currently working on this interesting website:
http://www.intuneacademy.com

Things are going well, but the camp is pretty exhausting. I want to study for the MCAT at night but when I get to my dorm room I just pass out from being so tired. Those rascals can suck the life force right out of ya. The kids are great, we are teaching kids ranging from 6-17, my kids are usually 13-17, and it is a ton of fun. The best is when they go "CooooOOOOooool". On the first day, as we were walking into the computer lab, a camper said, "Are we in heaven?" We also have some ridiculous kids. There was one kid named Ben, 6 years old, a math genius, memorized his multiplication table, could do square roots, fractions, X^2, and X^3, all this before he could even read! 8) It cracked me up. Sorry no pictures for this post, hopefully I'll have something to show soon.

Nintendo Cell Phone Concept

How come nintendo hasn't made a sweet official cell phone yet? I for one would buy it. I don't want any gimmicky cell phone, just one that can play some old school games, or even some newer ones like for the Gameboy Advance. I'll try to make this concept more detailed and higher poly, in better quality, and then send it to Nintendo demanding they make it ;)

No More Needles

New technology from HP for replacing needles
This is awesome news, I can't wait for the future. Nobody likes getting a needle. Except maybe cutters, and other freaks who like pain.

School is going well, I messed up in Biology and Physics but hopefully I can pull through with high Bs. I placed out of the final for Organic Chemistry which is one of the greatest academic achievements in my life I think. I need to start writing a personal statement, and start studying the MCAT book I got.

I'm going to visit my friend Ben in Costa Rica in January, he sells real estate on beach front properties. He told me I could move there tomorrow and work for his company. Man, it is tempting to drop everything and just do it. I think if I get accepted into med school I will defer for a year and go there and just live a year there. That would be sweet.

Oh and Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS is so damn good/hard as hell. It will make your nintendo grow a beard because it is so hardcore and manly. Chuck Norris can't even beat it on Easy. Yeah, its that hard.

ER Visit

I went to volunteer at the ER pretty late last Sunday, started at 8:50pm and went until 12:50am. When I get there I usually stand at the corner of the Doctors' booth and try to see what is going on, what the nurses are talking about and think of who I am going to ask to follow. I overheard one of the nurses ask Dr. Ellis (a very attractive ER doctor in her late 30s, maybe early 40s) how her court case went. She said it was dreadfully long, but the judge ruled in her favor, and that the patient could not come in during the night when she worked. Apparently she had a 20 year old female stalking her, who turned out to be gay. At first she thought the girl was looking to her as a motherly figure but found out during the trial that she was gay. It was a pretty crazy story.
I asked Dr. Strauss if I could follow him, he is an older guy, probably in his 50s, who always wears cool clothes, has his hair slicked back, and seems pretty buff for a guy his age. He said he would but not that night because his voice was almost gone, and to try again some other time. I worked up the courage to ask Dr. Ellis and she gladfully said to no problem. There was a patient who had a dizzy spell, 2 patients who had chest pain, a woman suspected to have MRSA, and a pregnant 17 year old who was spotting. I'll elaborate on each case later. It was a very fun night. A nurse got a really good looking carry out dish from a chinese place. She said it was "Singapore Chow Mein Fun". I want it.
Also, wanted to put down some notes that I took from when I followed Dr. Frizner two weekends ago.
Diaphoresis = sweating
PET scan - sugar metabolism. Cancer cells light up, need biopsy.
Arterial blood gas
Metastisized - means the cancer has spread
Albumin - protein
Sarcoma - cancer that starts in the muscle
Banana Bag - Sodium Chloride with a bright yellow color, used to sober up drunks. Whenever you see one, you know someone was having a good time.
Also here is a chart that he writes down on each patient's paper:

'Medical Tricorder' Uses Ultrasound To Heal

A device that resembles Star Trek's medical tricorder uses high-intensity focused ultrasound rays to repair punctured lungs at the Harborview Medical Center, which is working with the University of Washington to hone the equipment.

"No one has ever looked at treating lungs with ultrasound," bioengineering professor Shahram Vaezy told SpaceRef.com. "The results are really impressive," he added, but the technique is not yet being tested on humans.

No longer merely a diagnostic tool, ultrasound is being used to develop bloodless surgery techniques requiring no scalpels, allowing invisible rays to heal injuries. The focused beams create an extremely hot spot in the tissue, heating the blood cells until they cauterise the wound without generating heat through the surrounding tissue as a laser would.

"You can penetrate deep into the body and deliver the energy to the bleeding very accurately," Vaezy explained, Tests on the lungs of pigs showed that the ultrasound could seal injuries in under two minutes.

So far so good

So I managed to get an A in Chemistry 1, it was a tough class and required almost all of my time and attention. I had to sacrifice going to the beach with my friends which was a pretty painful thing to do. But all the hard work, late nights up studying flash cards, typing up lab reports, and early mornings paid off and I got the grade I worked hard for. I hope to keep up this routine and maintain the good grades. I start chemistry 2 tomorrow morning.

I also finished reading a book recommended to me by a good friend, titled "Complications" by Atul Gawande. It is all about the many difficulties that doctors face in today's medicine, where society stands in its decisions, and the imperfect science that it is. It was really a good read and he definitely did his research and provided many statistics. There was a part towards the end about how many times doctors make decisions based on their gut and these decisions are highly variable throughout the country. A patient is more likely to be recommended back surgery in Santa Barbara, California than more conservative treatments in Brooklyn, New York.

I thought to myself, how can we as humanity improve upon this situation. I imagined a futuristic computer system where a doctor could input their patients information, lab results, and diagnosis, and then, like a google search, be shown a run down of similar patients with their treatments received and outcomes in percentages. Today hospitals have closed information systems where patient information has to be re-entered into each different hospital they go to. Medical information is not shared due to hippo laws, protecting patients' privacy. I asked some friends what the need is for this and they said people don't want others to know about their sexually transmitted diseases, or what surgeries they might have had. This is where the obstacle lies I believe. What if there was a way to get through this barrier, either by anonymizing the data, providing false names, or other possibilities. I think the information it provides to doctors across the world would greatly improve the treatment and outcome of visits to emergency rooms.

Next up, I plan to read his next book titled "Better".

Towson so far

Three weeks have gone by since I started General Chemistry I at Towson. I have met some really cool people in my class and I really enjoy waking up each morning and having one single goal: to attend class, pay attention, do my work, and be the best student I can. A few of us have started a study group and it has really paid off. Don't like to brag but for the first exam I got the highest grade I think I have ever received on any exam, a 99 . I am really happy because I remember dropping chemistry with a W freshman year at Maryland. I remember feeling so shitty when I got a D on my first exam back then. I felt like I was incapable of reaching the goal I wanted. It feels good to know that I do have it in me, to accomplish the task I set in front of me.

It is just the beginning, I have two more exams and a final. This class is intense, and there is a ton of work and studying, but I am enjoying it. It is a great challenge for me.

Also, volunteering at the ER has been a great experience. I have seen so many things, and learn so much every time I go. I got to watch a surgery of removal of the appendix. It was pretty sweet. I thought I would get nauseous but I guess all the messed up shit I've seen on the internet has desensitized me haha. It feels good to help anyway I can there. Meeting and talking with the nurses, EMTs and doctors is fun too.

My old boss called me and wants me to do some contract work, but I don't know if I will have time for it. I stay up pretty late each night trying to get as much done as I can. It would be nice to make some money though. I'll have to think it over.

I loaded DSOrganize onto my Nintendo DS and it is a great freeware application with many features like Paint, Todolist, an image browser, a file browser, an IRC chat client, and a text only web browser which is great for reading in bed. I would like to create a flash card type study application for it but I don't have the time right now. It would be nice to export a .txt file from excel and import it and be able to study all those polyatomic ions and other things I need to memorize.

Also, I found this awesome new website called Jott.com and basically it is this free service where you call this number and you say whatever you want, and then a few minutes later you get an email with whatever you said in text format. This can be used for reminders and todolist stuff which I think is great.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

This game was totally awesome. Probably the best 2d pixel art graphics I have ever seen. Konami did a great job on this one. You can be either a dude with a whip or a chick with magic, or you can be them both, and theres a ton of different weapons. After you beat the game you can unlock other characters to play through the game with, you can unlock Richter from the PS1 Castlevania game Symphony of the Night, and you can play as Maria who is a little girl that throws birds at bad guys, and you can also unlock the two evil vampire sisters, which are super powerful, and lastly, if you have enough free time, you can unlock a bad guy you can play as "Old Axe Armor." In order to unlock him you have to kill one-thousand of them and then save the game. Such an addicting game, A+!

Dog eat dog, thats the way it is...:grrr: There is a ton of competition out there nowadays, and many places require a degree and a few shipped titles under your belt, even for junior artists.

Its okay though, I have a new direction: medicine. Yes, its a huge 180, but becoming a doctor is another dream I have had for a long time. I will be going back to school starting this summer in order to take the prerequisites needed to take the MCATs and eventually apply to medical school. I am sure it will be very difficult, and give me much grief, but I will be upset with myself if I don't atleast try. I have been volunteering at the ER of a local hospital for some time now, and really do enjoy everything I have seen.

Nintendo DS is an awesome tool, I would like to create a flash card application that will allow you to study material you load through text files and images. It would be great to study in the comfort of your own bed. I hope to have something to show soon enough.

Back from Israel!

Went to Israel for my aunt Tommy's wedding, it was an awesome time. Got to stay with my family and do all sorts of fun things like go on hikes and eat at some great restaurants. Had a lot of fun going to some pubs and parties with my cousins, and for Passover the whole family rented out several beach side cabins at the Sea of Galilee. I sure to love it there, there are a ton of hotties. Maybe one day I will live there...

Click here to check out all the pictures I took

New Portfolio!

I finally finished creating a new portfolio, go check it out! I might make a few changes in the next couple of days, and if I can find the time I will try to get a normal mapped object put in. I will be sending it out to different game companies across the Nation. Wish me luck ;)

To Do List

I made a very simple to do list web page program that I put in the Tools section. I use it everyday and I find it very useful. I programmed it for both ASP and PHP, and you can customize it however you like it pretty easily. You can download it and install it on your own webpage but it will require either an access database for ASP or a mysql for PHP. Check it out
